Major Project #1 – Radio Commercial

Radio Commercial Instructions and Grading Criteria
(If you don’t understand any of these, ASK!)

Radio Commercial Assignment – 100pts

USE HEADPHONES TO MIX YOUR AUDIO SOUND LEVELS FOR THIS PROJECT. THE VOICE OVER WHEN PLAYED ALONE SHOULD AVERAGE AROUND -6DB ON THE AUDIO METER WITHOUT EVER TOUCHING ZERO. THE SOUND EFFECTS AND MUSIC SHOULD BE BALANCED AGAINST THE VOLUME OF THE VOICE OVER AND BE CLEARLY AUDIBLE (NOT VERY LOW), BUT NOT OVER DOMINATING THE  VOICE OVER.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL WITH YOUR SOUND MIXING VOLUME LEVELS AS THESE ACCOUNT FOR 50% OF THIS MAJOR PROJECT’S GRADE!!!

Do your Radio Commercial Major Project using the following method:
1. Record your vo. Import it into Auditon’s Waveform interface. Remove the background noise using Effects>Noise Reduction. Change the timing to 29.5 seconds, if necessary, using Effects>Time and Pitch Shift. Adjust the vo’s volume to average around -6db without ever touching zero on the audiometer.

2. Change to the Multitrack interface in Audition. Place the vo in track one and set its volume to average near -6db without ever touching zero on the audiometer.

3. DO NOT ADD THE MUSIC NEXT! Instead add each sound effect one by one, positioning the SFX at the correct timing points with the vo by using the script provided. Add each sfx to a new track and mix the volume of each with the vo before moving to the next sfx. The SFX should be heard clear and strong without dominating the vo when the commercial plays.

4. ADD THE MUSIC LAST! Remember to trim the beginning of the music so there is music (not silence) when the commercial starts. Trim the end of the music to 30-seconds and create a 3-second fade out of the music at the end. Now play the commercial and mix the music volume with the vo and sfx, making sure to account for when the music gets louder. The MUSIC should be heard clear and strong without dominating the vo or sfx when the commercial plays.

VO= voice over

Record your VO using your phone (and mic if you have it).

Import the VO into Audition

Create a folder on your hard drive and name it “Radio Commercial,” then use File>Save and save the Audition Project File to this folder to your HD.

Use the script from the download link below to produce a :30 radio commercial with music:

CLICK HERE to download the Radio Commercial Major Project Files

20pts- Using the script provided, record your VO with room tone background noise and a 3-2-1 count down. Apply Effects>Nosie Reduction (first capture, then process). If the trimmed VO (trimmed means the recorded sound from the first word of the script to the last, with no extra before or after) is not exactly 29.5 seconds, use Effects>Time ad Pitch>Stretch and Pitch (process)  to set the VO time t exactly 29.5 seconds.

10pts- Set the VO sound level to AVERAGE just above and below -6db on the digital audio meters. DO NOT let the VO to EVER strike zero on the meter.

10pts-Import the sound effects (SFX) as separate audio tracks. Trim them and place them as called for in the script

20pts-Mix each SFX to a clearly audible (not too low) level mix with the VO (there is no definite level. Use headphones and your ears until it sounds right. Remember, the VO is the most important thing, but the SFX should be clearly heard in the sound mix with the voice.

20pts- Import your music track. Trim both the beginning of the music to make sure the music starts playing at the beginning of the commerial and at the end to make sure it ends at 30-seconds. Add a 3-second fade-out effect at the end and mix the MUSIC audio level to a pleasing audio level mix with the music clearly audible with the VO and SFX (start your music mix by setting the music audio level to -15db, then play, listen, and adjust as needed to a pleasing mix with the music,  VO and SFX). DO NOT LEAVE THE MUSIC AT -15DB!

10pts-Re-save your completed projectRadio Commercial Major Project” (File>Save)

10pts- Export your final project MP3 file to your external HD for Sound Cloud (File>Export Audio). Upload your exported MP3 to Sound Cloud and embed it into your WordPress Major Course Projects page as “Radio Commercial.”

Post your Major Projects page web address URL to Canvas for credit on this major project #1.

NOT AN ASSIGNMENT – Tips for better weekly broadcast writing

After reading through the print to broadcast re-write efforts of the class, I’ve decided to offer you a hopefully useful style guide and quick tips sheet to help you improve your weekly broadcast writing format and style.

Please refer to the following document when doing your weekly broadcast re-write assignments:

CLICK HERE  to download the Broadcast News Writing 12 Differences

Please use the following template when creating your weekly broadcast re-writes and please DO NOT alter the format:

CLICK HERE to download the Broadcast News Format Template

The  SLUG (Story title, date, time of newscast, and your name) in ALL CAPS, single-spaced,

Keep the body 12-point, double spaced. Do not create extra lines or new paragraphs. Keep it all in single block text.

Place the ### centered on a new line after the last line of the written story.

Read and time your story and place it as indicated on the template.

PLEASE, COPY AND PASTE THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL ARTICLE FROM THE WEB AND THE WEB LINK WHERE IT CAME FROM, NOT JUST THE WEB LINK, ON THE NEXT BLANK PAGE OF THE DOCUMENT N WHICH YOU CREATED  YOUR BROADCAST RE-WRITE. DO NOT CREATE  A SEPARATE DOCUMENT FOR THIS

PLEASE, UPLOAD THE COMPLETED BROADCAST RE-WRITE TO YOUR WORDPRESS MEDA LIBRARY AND POST IS TO YOUR BLOGS PAGE, NOT YOUR ICAs PAGE, SO A LINK TO IT SHOWS UP ON YOUR BLOGS PAGE THAT OPENS THE WORD DOC WHEN CLICKED, SO I CAN READ IT AND SEE THE ARTICLE IT WAS SOURCED FROM WHEN GRADING.
